Marble Handicrafts Emporium, Agra

Your driver may tell you this is an interesting place to go to and that you do not have to buy... and yes, you can see men demonstrating the good old art of setting gems into the marble (just as they did at the Taj Mahal all those years ago) and you cannot argue that it is a terribly time consuming and rather impressive art. However make no mistake you have been brought here because your driver gets Rs100 for pitching up with you regardless of whether you buy something or not.... if you buy then he will get a commission too so for him it is a win win situation.

If you are like me (and I detest these kinds of places) you will spend the short time of the demonstration thinking how acutely annoyed you are to be there and wondering how long you will have to endure the experience. Like magic you will be invited into the warehouse/shop to see all the ludicrously expensive pieces of marbled work. Yes they are impressive but no I do not want to buy does not work despite the "come look, you do not have to buy, just look" routine you were given 5 minutes previous! The "just look there is no pressure" o course, as in all these places and scenarios, moves aside for the pushy, pushy sale in a falsely, falsely friendly, friendly way!

Unless you cannot live without having a 5 minutes demonstration, you genuinely wish to purchase some very expensive items or you are being kind to your driver, do not bother coming here... the chances are you will end up here irrespective!!!
